Brian Harmer is Vice President of Underwriting at Tangram Insurance Services, where he leads underwriting strategy and program management for several of the company’s most complex and high-performing specialty insurance programs. In his role, Brian oversees a portfolio representing more than $140 million in written premium across multiline coverages including General Liability, Commercial Auto, Property, Inland Marine, Workers’ Compensation, and Excess/Umbrella in both admitted and non-admitted markets. His leadership spans Tangram’s Fuel Dealers & Distributors, Equipment Dealers, Portable Sanitation, and Security Guard programs.
Brian is responsible for managing a team of underwriters while driving profitability, production growth, underwriting performance, and service excellence across the organization’s underwriting operations. He also serves as the primary relationship manager for several global carrier partners, overseeing underwriting authority, book profitability, loss ratio management, compliance, and long-term program growth initiatives. In addition to managing existing programs, Brian plays a key role in Tangram’s expansion strategy by spearheading the development and launch of new specialty insurance programs from initial concept and carrier negotiations through compliance, filings, and go-to-market execution.
Since joining Tangram in 2013, Brian has steadily advanced through the organization, holding positions including Underwriting Assistant, Underwriter, Lead Package Underwriter, Program Manager, Assistant Vice President of Underwriting, and ultimately Vice President of Underwriting. Throughout his tenure, he has built deep expertise in specialty program underwriting, operational leadership, carrier management, and program development across a wide range of niche industries. His experience includes oversight of energy, contractors, specialty fleet, social services, janitorial, and building services programs, along with underwriting large and complex accounts nationwide.
Known for his collaborative leadership style and strong technical underwriting knowledge, Brian has successfully implemented operational improvements that enhanced underwriting efficiency, service standards, and profitability while supporting long-term growth. He has also played a significant role in mentoring and developing underwriting talent, onboarding new team members, and partnering with internal operations and technology teams to improve workflow, rating systems, and underwriting processes.
